How to do your daily closing and get your Z-report

In Germany, a daily closing with a Z-report (daily report) is required by law. In Austria and Switzerland it’s optional, but it helps with your accounting. You do the daily closing by closing the session in Shopify POS, on POS Lite or POS Pro.

Only when you close a session correctly can OpenFiskal:

  • generate the Z-report, the signed daily closing
  • save all sales and cash data for the day, including the starting and closing cash amounts
  • provide a valid audit export, such as DSFinV-K, for tax audits in Germany

Open a session at the start of the day

  1. In Shopify POS, tap the register icon in the bottom-left corner.
  2. Tap “Open session”.
  3. Enter the cash in the drawer. To count bills and coins one by one, tap “Count cash”.
  4. Tap “Done”.

If you start selling without opening a session, Shopify opens one automatically and uses the expected cash from the previous session as the starting amount.

If a session was already open before you installed OpenFiskal (in Germany, before you went live), you won’t get a Z-report for it, because OpenFiskal didn’t capture how it started. This happens only once: close that session, open a new one, and every session after that gets its Z-report. In Germany, the sales from that first session are still signed by the TSE but don’t appear in the DSFinV-K export, so let your tax advisor know.

Close the session at the end of the day

  1. In Shopify POS, tap the register icon.
  2. Tap “Close session”.
  3. Enter the cash you counted in the drawer.
  4. Tap the checkmark and enter the float, the cash you leave in the drawer for the next day.
  5. Take the rest of the cash out of the drawer.
  6. Check the totals on the “Session complete” screen. The counted and expected cash should match.

OpenFiskal creates the Z-report automatically within a couple of minutes of closing the session.

Find your Z-reports

In the OpenFiskal app. Open OpenFiskal in your Shopify admin and click “Z-Reports”. Your Z-reports are listed by register, with the start and end of each session, and you can click a Z-report ID to open it.

To download several at once, set the register and date filters, click “Export” at the top right and choose one of the two options:

  • “Z-Reports”: every Z-report in the period as a separate PDF, in a ZIP file.
  • “Register report”: one PDF that brings together all taxes and payment methods for the period, useful as a monthly summary for your accounting. Requires OpenFiskal Plus.

In Shopify POS. Tap the “Z-Reports” tile to view and print your Z-reports at the register. If you don’t see the tile, add the Z-Reports POS app as described in POS Apps (Extensions).

Z-reports print on an A4 printer, not on your receipt printer, because Shopify only sends sales receipts to receipt printers.

If you forget to close a session

The session stays open and the next day’s sales go into it, so your Z-report will cover more than one day. Close the session as soon as you notice. If you’re not at the device, you can close it remotely from your Shopify admin: go to “Point of Sale” > “Register”, select the open session and click “Close session”.

Can sessions close automatically?

Yes, if you only take card payments. Reach out to our support team to discuss it, and we can turn on automatic closing for your store. Open sessions then close at 11:59 PM every night and the Z-report is created right after. A sale after midnight opens a new session for the new day. You’ll still see sessions in Shopify POS, because Shopify keeps opening its own, and you can ignore them.

If you take cash, keep closing your sessions manually, since you need to count the cash at the end of the day anyway.

Every cash movement across your sessions is also recorded in the cash book. If something still isn’t working, write to us at hello@openfiskal.com.
