Linking the POS / Payment Terminal with RT Online

The 2025 Budget Law introduced the obligation to link electronic payment terminals to RT online, starting from 1 January 2026.

The law itself talks about "POS", however what is actually meant is a Payment Terminal.

Why is this important?

The linkage is the mechanism that lets the tax system connect "how you got paid" to "what you fiscally certified".

Legally, the payment terminal must be “always connected” to the RT terminal that records and transmits your transactions to the Agenzia delle Entrate.

Note that this connection is only registered online in the “Fatture e Corrispettivi” portal, it is not a physical connection between devices.

Both physical payment terminals (i.e. at a POS) AND virtual payment terminals (i.e. at a Webshop) have to be registered!

Until when do you have to do it?

Scenario

Connection Window

Payment Terminal held on Jan 1, 2026 (or acquired in Jan)

Until April 19th  (45 days after the portal availability date March 5th)

Terminal Changes after Jan 31, 2026, including: New Terminal, Replacement of Terminal, Change of the terminal's financial operator/acquirer, Decomissioning of Terminal

Between the 6th day of the second month following the change and the last working day of that same month.

Example: A Payment Terminal activated in April 2026 must be connected between June 6 and June 30, 2026.

What's the penalty if you miss it?

Following the new Budget Law, D.Lgs. 471/1997, art. 11(5), which previously only covered failures to install a fiscal terminal, now also includes failures to link a payment terminal to the RT.

The fine for missing the linking ranges from €1,000 to €4,000. However, there is also a risk of accessory sanctions including the suspension of the business license/authorization.

How to do it

Please follow this guide, prepared by our partner Fiskaly:

Finding the Terminal ID

This is only needed for physical payment terminals. Virtual Terminals (online payments) do not need to specify a Terminal ID.

Shopify Payments:

As of March 2026, there is no official guidance on this from Shopify yet. Please contact Shopify support directly.

SumUp Card readers:

The Terminal ID is the Serial number of the card reader. You can find it in the SumUp app or in your device settings.

SumUp Tap to Pay:

The Terminal ID is a unique code generated each time Tap To Pay is activated on a device. Read this SumUp Support Article for details.

Satispay:

Satispay is treated as a Virtual Terminal, thus you don't need to enter a Terminal ID. Read this Satispay Support Article for details.
