How to print receipts with OpenFiskal in Germany and Austria
You can print receipts in two ways: Shopify’s own receipts with the OpenFiskal QR code added, or OpenFiskal receipts printed through the checkout extension. Both are compliant and both work on POS Lite and POS Pro, so you don’t need Shopify POS Pro to print receipts.

How your customer can get a receipt
Your customer can take a paper receipt or a digital one, which you can show on screen or send by email.
On screen. Once you’ve added the OpenFiskal checkout extension, the QR code appears on screen after checkout. Turn the screen toward the customer: they scan the code, open the receipt on their phone and can save it there. If you print with OpenFiskal, you also print the receipt from the extension; if you print with Shopify, you only need it to show the QR code. How to add the OpenFiskal extensions to Shopify POS explains how to add it.

By email. In the OpenFiskal app, go to “Settings” and open “Email” in the “Receipts” section. You can send the receipt in two ways:
- As a separate email from OpenFiskal. Turn on “Automated POS customer receipt emails” and OpenFiskal emails the receipt after every checkout on a fiscalized register. This only works if the customer’s email address is added to the cart before checkout.
- Inside Shopify’s receipt email. Copy the code for the fiscal QR code, the link to the PDF receipt, or both, and paste it into Shopify’s “POS and mobile receipt” notification (Shopify admin, “Settings” > “Notifications”). The customer gets one email instead of two, and it also works when they give their email address after checkout. Insert fiscal QR code or a link to the PDF receipt in POS receipt emails and invoices has the steps.
The two ways to print
With either method, sale, return and exchange receipts carry the fiscal QR code (TSE in Germany, RKSV in Austria), so the choice comes down to how you work.
Print with OpenFiskal if you need A4 receipts or want the quickest setup. You add the checkout extension and you’re ready to print, with no code to paste.
Print with Shopify if you want more control over the receipt design and nothing extra at checkout. Shopify’s receipt editor has more customization options, but adding the QR code as a Liquid block takes a few more steps.
Once you’ve chosen, follow the setup steps for that method. You can switch to the other one later if you change your mind.
Set up Print with Shopify
You add the OpenFiskal code snippet to Shopify’s receipt editor once, and the QR code prints on your Shopify receipts from then on. In short: click “Copy code” on the OpenFiskal app’s home page, click “Open editor”, add a “Custom Liquid” block to the footer, paste the code and save. Display the TSE or RKSV QR code on printed Shopify receipts has the full steps with screenshots.
Your Shopify POS app needs to be on version 11.10 or later.
Set up Print with OpenFiskal
With this method you don’t add the OpenFiskal code snippet to Shopify’s receipt editor, since your customers get OpenFiskal’s receipt instead of Shopify’s.
- Add the OpenFiskal checkout extension, following How to add the OpenFiskal extensions to Shopify POS.
- Turn off Shopify’s automatic printing, otherwise each sale prints Shopify’s receipt as well as OpenFiskal’s. In the Shopify admin, go to “Sales channels” > “Point of Sale”, then “Settings” > “Printed Receipts” to open the receipt editor. Click “Receipt” on the left to collapse the menu and show the printing settings, choose the locations at the top, and turn off “Auto-print sales receipts”.
- In the OpenFiskal app, go to “Settings”, click “General” in the “Receipts” section and select A4 or thermal as the receipt format.
- Back in the “Receipts” section, click “Printed receipts”, select your printer type and turn “Auto-print” on or off. This setting only applies to OpenFiskal receipts printed through the checkout extension.
OpenFiskal receipts print through Shopify POS, so any receipt printer Shopify supports works too. The full list is on Shopify’s supported receipt printers page. If you need to buy one, we recommend one of these two models, which are among the most recent and connect over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LAN and USB:
- Epson TM-m30III (connection guide)
- Star Micronics TSP143IV-UEWB (connection guide)
You connect the printer in the Shopify POS app, following the guide for your model. If it isn’t detected, won’t connect or prints badly, contact Shopify Support.
For A4 receipts, tapping “Print” in the checkout extension opens your device’s print window, where you can send the receipt to any printer already connected to it.
Customize your receipt design
To design OpenFiskal receipts, go to “Settings” in the OpenFiskal app and click “Editor” in the “Receipts” section. The editor covers both thermal and A4 receipts and requires OpenFiskal Plus.
Shopify receipts are designed in Shopify’s own receipt editor, which you open from the Shopify admin under “Sales channels” > “Point of Sale” > “Settings” > “Printed Receipts”.
