Send the Italian receipt (Scontrino) via email

The digital receipt via email is the most convenient way to deliver the commercial document to your customer: no paper, no printer, and the customer finds the receipt in their inbox, where they can dig it up even months later. It can also be a great excuse to ask customers for their email!

You have two ways to do it: go to OpenFiskal > Settings > Email.

Automatic email sending

Automatic sending only works for in-store sales. If you sell online, use the next option instead, "Adding the link to Shopify notifications".

It's the simplest option for in-store sales: you turn it on with a switch and don't need to touch any template.

Go to OpenFiskal > Settings > Email and click ACTIVATE in the top right for Automatic receipt sending via email for POS customers.

From that moment, every time you complete a checkout on a register where OpenFiskal is active, and the customer has left their email address, OpenFiskal automatically sends them the receipt. If the customer has not left an email, nothing is sent.

If you prefer the receipt to arrive inside the personalised email the customer already receives from Shopify, instead of getting a separate one, you can insert a link to the OpenFiskal receipt in the Shopify notification template.

1. Copy the code from OpenFiskal

Go to OpenFiskal > Settings > Email and scroll down to the Embed OpenFiskal receipt link in POS order emails box. Click Copy code.

2. Paste it into the Shopify notification

  1. In the Shopify admin go to Settings > Notifications.
  2. Open the notification template you need. For in-store sales use "POS and mobile receipt". For online sales use "Order confirmation".
  3. At the top, click Edit code.
  4. Paste the OpenFiskal code where you want the link to appear, for example below the payment details.
  5. Click Preview to check that the link is in the right spot. If you're not happy with it, move it and try again. You can also change the text, which by default says "View Receipt".

You can insert the same code into the templates of other apps or notifications too.

In the Email settings you'll also find a box called Embed fiscal QR code in POS order emails and other apps. It's meant for Germany and Austria, where regulations require certain fiscal information to appear in digital receipts as well. In Italy you don't need it: you can ignore it. The box you want is the receipt link one.

Why collecting email addresses pays off

Every email address you collect at the till is a receipt you don't have to print. The customer has their copy, you don't use paper and you don't depend on a printer. It's also a way to collect customer data for marketing purposes, if the customer consents.

It's worth making it a habit in store: ask for the email at payment and explain in one sentence that the receipt will arrive there and stay available. Many customers prefer it, because they won't lose the receipt if they later need to make a return.

Remember though that the format of the copy must be agreed with the customer: if they refuse the digital version and ask for paper, you must be able to provide it. See Printing the receipt.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need to activate both options?

No. Automatic sending on its own is enough. The link in the notifications is for when you prefer the customer to receive a single email instead of two.

  • The customer didn't leave an email. What happens?

Nothing is sent. You can still have them scan the QR code at the till or print the receipt for them.

  • Is the email receipt as valid as the printed one?

Yes. For fiscal purposes what counts is the transmission to the Agenzia delle Entrate, which happens in any case. The format of the copy handed to the customer does not change the validity of the document.
