Italy: Printing your OpenFiskal receipt - printing methods and compatible printers

With OpenFiskal the receipt is transmitted directly to the Agenzia delle Entrate. What counts for fiscal purposes is the transmission, not the printing: the customer's copy can be digital.

The law does not require you to print, but it does require you to transmit the transaction to the Agency (OpenFiskal takes care of that), and to provide the customer, in agreement with them, with proof of the transmission. This proof can be a digital receipt shown via QR Code or sent by email. If the customer insists on a paper receipt, though, you must be able to print it. If you don't want to buy a dedicated printer, and expect to print receipts only in exceptional cases, the A4 Printer option has you covered with any office printer. Read the guide for more information.

The good news is that there are two ways to print with OpenFiskal, and one doesn't require buying expensive receipt printers.

How to deliver the receipt to the customer

The customer can receive their commercial document (receipt) in three ways:

  • QR code at the till: through the OpenFiskal extension, the customer scans it with their phone and opens the digital receipt, which can be saved as a PDF.
  • Email: if they left their details, and you added the receipt link to the notification or activated OpenFiskal's setting to send the receipt by email (guide), the customer receives it automatically.
  • Paper: only if they ask for it and you have a printer connected.

None of the three is more valid than the others. Many in-store customers still expect a paper receipt, though, so keep a printing solution ready.

Choose how to print

Go to OpenFiskal, then Settings, then Printed receipts. Under Printer type, choose one of the two options: A4 Printer or Receipt Printer.

A4 Printer

It's the default option and doesn't require buying anything. When you tap the OpenFiskal extension at the till, the iOS or Android print window opens showing the receipt in A4 format, and you can send it to any sheet printer already connected to the device.

The A4 receipt is a fully valid commercial document. It's the right solution if you print rarely and don't want to buy a dedicated printer.

Receipt Printer

Choose this option if you want to use a regular thermal receipt printer. You can also activate Automatic printing, in the OpenFiskal settings, which prints receipts for sales, returns and exchanges on its own, without having to request them each time.
To print from the till you must first have added the «Receipts» POS app and its tile to the POS Smart Grid (guide).

Which printers you can use

OpenFiskal prints through Shopify POS: any printer supported by Shopify (except the Epson FP81 RT) also works with OpenFiskal. You don't need a fiscal printer or a model certified for Italy.
The complete and always up-to-date list is on the Shopify help center. If you need to buy one, we recommend one of these two models: they're the most recent, the easiest to find in Italy and cover all connection modes.

Model

Connectivity

Epson TM-m30III (connection guide)

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LAN, USB

Star Micronics TSP143IV-UEWB (connection guide)

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LAN, USB

Connecting the printer is a Shopify procedure and is done from the Shopify POS app: follow the guide for your model in the list above. If the printer is not detected, won't connect or prints badly, write to Shopify support.

Can I use my fiscal printer?

If you have a fiscal printer / Registratore Telematico, such as the Epson FP-81II RT, even though it's compatible with Shopify, at the moment it cannot be used with OpenFiskal to print our commercial document.

If you're switching from an RT to OpenFiskal you therefore need one of the printers from the Shopify list, or you can use the A4 Printer option. Remember that the old Registratore Telematico must in any case be put out of service or deactivated on the Agenzia delle Entrate portal when you stop using it (read our guide).

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I absolutely have to buy a printer?

Yes and no. Printing is not mandatory, and having a receipt printer is not mandatory. But if a customer refuses the digital copy and demands a paper one, you must be able to provide it. If you don't want to buy a dedicated printer, and expect to print receipts only in exceptional cases, the A4 Printer option has you covered with any office printer.

  • I already have a printer I used with Shopify POS. Does it work?

If you had the Epson FP81 RT, no. It's among the models supported by Shopify but it doesn't work with OpenFiskal. If you had any other printer supported by Shopify, you don't need to do anything: just select «Receipt Printer» in the OpenFiskal settings.

  • Do I need to buy a model certified for Italy?

No. Certification concerns Registratori Telematici, which you don't use with OpenFiskal.

  • I only sell online. Do I need a printer?

No. The customer receives the receipt by email automatically, provided you've set up the notifications (guide).
